Sanwal Yaar Piya Review: Did the Ending Justify 40 Episodes of Misery?

If you threw your remote at the TV last night, you are not alone. After 40 episodes of dragging us through the mud, the finale of Geo TV’s marvel aired yesterday, and it has left the internet divided between rage and confusion. Here is the Sanwal Yaar Piya Review:

The writer, Hashim Nadeem, is known for tragic romances (Khuda Aur Muhabbat 3), but this ending felt less like a tragedy and more like a formatting error. Here is our no-spoiler-but-heavy-opinion review of the end.

1. The “Nice Guy” Loses Again

Let’s be honest: We watched this show for Sanwal (Ahmed Ali Akbar). He was the “Green Flag” of the century—supportive, soft-spoken, and respectful.

  • The Betrayal: For the writers to have Sanwal sacrifice his love in the last 10 minutes so that Piya could marry Aliyaar (Feroze Khan) feels like a slap in the face.
  • The Message: It reinforces the toxic trope that “Nice guys finish last” and that toxic, entitled obsession (Aliyaar’s behavior) eventually wins if you are rich enough.

2. Durefishan’s “Piya” Problem

Durefishan looked stunning, as always. But her character, Piya, was a spectator in her own life. In the finale, when she had the choice, she didn’t choose. She let the men decide her fate. In 2026, audiences want female leads with agency, not trophies who are passed between the “Good Poor Guy” and the “Rich Bad Guy.”

3. Ahmed Ali Akbar: The Only Saviour

If this drama is remembered, it will be for Ahmed Ali Akbar’s acting. The scene where he says goodbye to Piya’s father without shedding a tear, but his voice cracks? That is an acting masterclass. He elevated a mediocre script into something watchable.

The Verdict

Rating: 2/5 Stars (5 stars for Ahmed, 0 for the script). The show had great OST, great visuals, but a hollow soul. If you haven’t watched it yet, watch the first 10 episodes and then skip to the last 15 minutes. You won’t miss anything.
