Mohabbat Review: Feroze Khan’s Big Geo Drama Is Already Fizzling Out

Mohabbat review: Feroze Khan’s big Geo drama is already fizzling out

Here is my Mohabbat review after the first eight episodes, and I’ll be blunt: Geo’s big autumn drama arrived with all the noise of a blockbuster, and four weeks in, the buzz is already fading. Big names, a 7th Sky Entertainment budget and a prime slot should have made Mohabbat the drama everyone was talking about. Instead, it is quietly slipping into the background.

Mohabbat: Cast, Story and Where to Watch

Mohabbat airs on Geo TV on Mondays and Tuesdays, with episodes uploaded to the HAR PAL GEO YouTube channel. It is written by Shafia Khan, directed by Asad Jabal, and produced by Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi.

The story is the classic rich-boy, middle-class-girl setup. Yahya falls for his colleague Asiya, but his mother Saleha refuses to accept a girl from a “lesser” family and works behind the scenes to humiliate Asiya’s household. Asiya walks away believing Yahya betrayed her. Running alongside is a second couple: Meherma proposes a practical marriage to Zarrar, and the two slowly fall for each other.

A Blockbuster Launch

When the teaser dropped in September, entertainment sites were predicting a blockbuster. Feroze Khan is still one of the biggest draws in Pakistani TV after Khaani and Khuda Aur Mohabbat, and Aina Asif has built a young fan base of her own. Episode 1, aired on 28 September, has crossed 23 million views on YouTube, and the channel proudly slapped “23 Million+ Views” on the thumbnail.

Mohabbat Is Not Creating the Buzz

Then look at what came next. On the official HAR PAL GEO uploads (as of 25 October):

Episode 128 Sep23M
Episode 512 Oct10M
Episode 613 Oct10M
Episode 719 Oct9.1M
Episode 820 Oct8.7M

To be fair, newer episodes have had less time to collect views, and 9 to 10 million is still a number most dramas would love. But Episode 5 has been up for nearly two weeks and is sitting at less than half of the premiere. For a show built on star power, that is not the curve you want. The first-episode crowd showed up for Feroze Khan, sampled the story, and a big chunk of them did not come back.

Social media tells the same story. You are not seeing Mohabbat dialogues trending, fan edits taking over Instagram, or the weekly “did you watch last night’s episode?” arguments that real hits create. When the drama did go viral this week, it was for the wrong reasons.

The Shahvir Kadwani Problem

7th Sky Entertainment shared an Episode 8 showdown between Shahvir Kadwani and Samina Ahmed on Instagram, complete with shouted dialogues and flying glasses. Instead of hype, it got trolled. Reviewit.pk called the scene over the top and pointed out that the show is increasingly centred on Shahvir’s macho “angry young man” act, which does not sit naturally with an actor of his age and experience. The comment sections were brutal; one viewer joked that the glass gave the best performance in the scene.

Shahvir is Abdullah Kadwani’s son, and even before the premiere some viewers suspected that Feroze Khan’s casting was partly a way to launch him to a bigger audience. Whether that is true or not, the more screen time shifts away from Yahya and Asiya, the more the drama loses the very hook that pulled people in.

What’s Working, What’s Not

Working: The cast on paper is strong, with Savera Nadeem a natural fit for the scheming mother, and 7th Sky has clearly spent money on the production. The Meherma–Zarrar marriage-of-convenience track has potential if it is written with restraint.

Not working: We have seen this exact story (rich family, disapproving mother, misunderstanding, revenge) a hundred times, and Mohabbat has not yet given audiences a reason to care about this version. Feroze Khan is the selling point, yet the conversation around the show is about everyone but him. And when the melodrama is turned up this high, scenes become memes instead of moments.

Verdict: Is Mohabbat Fizzling Out?

Right now, yes. Mohabbat is not a flop, but it is not the event Geo sold us either. It had the cast, the budget and the launch numbers, and it is wasting them on a recycled script and a misplaced focus. With a long run still ahead, there is time to fix it: put Yahya and Asiya back at the centre, tone down the shouting, and give the revenge track some real bite. If not, this one will be remembered for a 23-million-view premiere and very little else.

Initial rating: 2.5/5. Are you still watching Mohabbat, or have you already switched off? Tell me in the comments.
