On 16 October 2026, the petrol price in Pakistan was Rs390.23 per litre. That’s after a “relief” cut of Rs3.63. Diesel actually went up, to Rs396.96.
And here’s what most people still haven’t clocked: fuel prices no longer change every two weeks, or even every week. They change daily. Add September inflation of 10.3%, and your monthly budget is getting hit from every side.
You can’t control Brent crude. You can control how much of your salary goes into the tank. Here’s how.
1. How the Petrol Price in Pakistan Now Changes Daily
In July, the government handed price-setting to OGRA and moved to daily revisions, using a seven-day average of international prices. The official reason was transparency in a volatile oil market.
- What it means for you: The price you paid on Monday isn’t the price you’ll pay on Friday.
- Why it’s moving: Renewed US-Iran tension. On 15 October, Brent was sitting around $106 a barrel.
- Do this: Check OGRA’s daily rate before a full-tank fill. If a cut is coming, a half-tank today and the rest tomorrow is basic sense.
2. Claim the PM Fuel Relief If You Qualify
If you ride a bike, drive a rickshaw or own a car up to 800cc, you’re probably leaving money on the table by not registering.
- Register: SMS
REGwith your CNIC, number plate, province letter and registration date to 9771. The SMS is free. - Get your token: Send
TOKto 9771 before you go to the pump. - What you get: The Petroleum Minister says relief of up to Rs100 per litre. Reported token sizes are Rs500 a week for bikes and rickshaws, and Rs1,000 every 10 days for 800cc cars.
- Warning: Dozens of copycat “registration” websites are ranking on Google. The only number you need is 9771. Never give your CNIC to a random site.
By 2 October, 8.4 million people had registered and 7.5 million had used the relief. Join them.
3. Cut Litres, Not Just Rupees
The cheapest litre is the one you never burn.
- Carpool: Four colleagues in one car is a 75% cut in each person’s fuel bill. Simple maths.
- Fix the basics: Under-inflated tyres and a late oil change quietly eat your mileage.
- Bike over car: For solo trips across town, the gap is huge. As a rough illustration, 30 km a day on a bike doing 45 km/litre costs about Rs7,800 a month at Rs390. The same trip in an 800cc car doing 16 km/litre costs nearly three times as much.
4. Give Fuel Its Own Budget Line
Stop treating petrol as “misc”. Put it on its own line, with a 10% buffer for daily price swings. If it goes over two months in a row, that’s your sign to change how you commute, not to raid your emergency fund.
5. Watch the SBP on 26 October
The State Bank held its policy rate at 11.5% on 14 September, warning about Middle East oil risks. Inflation is at 10.3%, so the gap between the two is thin. The next decision is due on 26 October.
- Saver: If rates go up, lock in better profit rates on savings certificates or a term deposit.
- Borrower: Car financing and personal loans could get costlier. Don’t sign a new car loan this month without checking the decision first.
Verdict
Rs390 petrol isn’t a blip. Daily pricing means it’ll keep jumping around with every headline from the Gulf. The people who come out of this okay won’t be the ones complaining loudest. They’ll be the ones who registered on 9771, carpooled, tracked the daily rate and gave fuel its own budget line.
