The mid-range smartphone market is a brutal battleground. For years, if you had a budget of around PKR 130,000 to 150,000, you were essentially forced to choose between a heavily bloated Xiaomi device or a Samsung A-series phone that skimped on processing power. Carl Pei’s tech brand, Nothing, has been aggressively trying to break that duopoly. Following the massive global success of their previous budget entries, the company has officially unveiled the Nothing Phone (4a) and its slightly beefier sibling, the (4a) Pro.
With an upgraded chipset, a ridiculously fast display, and that signature transparent aesthetic, does the (4a) actually live up to the hype? Here is our hands-on review.
1. Nothing Phone (4a) – The Design: Transparent and Refined
Nothing knows that its biggest selling point is its visual identity, and they have not abandoned it. The Phone (4a) retains the iconic transparent plastic back, exposing the intricately designed internal coils and ribbon cables.
- The Glyph Interface: The LED light strips on the back have been refined. There are fewer zones compared to the flagship models, but they are brighter and more customizable. You can still use them as a visual ringtone, a fill light for the camera, or an Uber arrival timer.
- The Build: It feels incredibly premium in the hand. The flat aluminum-style plastic rails give it an iPhone-esque grip, and the incredibly thin, symmetrical bezels on the front make the competition look instantly dated.
2. The Display: Unmatched Speed at this Price
This is where the Phone (4a) absolutely destroys the competition. Nothing has equipped this mid-ranger with a 6.7-inch 144Hz AMOLED display. Most phones in this price bracket max out at 120Hz. The jump to 144Hz makes Nothing OS (which is already notoriously clean and bloatware-free) feel insanely snappy. Whether you are scrolling through Instagram or playing high-framerate games, the display is vibrant, color-accurate, and gets bright enough (2,000 nits peak) to comfortably use under direct sunlight.
3. Performance: The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 Sweet Spot
Under the hood, the Phone (4a) runs on Qualcomm’s highly efficient Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC.
- Daily Use: Paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM, the phone handles multitasking without a single stutter.
- Gaming: While it isn’t a dedicated gaming phone, the 7 Gen 4 pushes very respectable frame rates in demanding titles like PUBG Mobile and Genshin Impact without turning the back panel into a frying pan.
4. Cameras and Battery
Nothing has finally moved past the “more lenses equal better” gimmick. You get a dual 50MP setup on the back (Main and Ultrawide). The color science has been significantly improved over previous generations, offering punchy, contrast-heavy photos that look ready for social media straight out of the camera app.
As for endurance, the massive 5,000 mAh battery paired with the power-efficient chip easily delivers a day and a half of screen-on time. It supports 45W fast charging, getting you from zero to 50% in under 25 minutes (though, unfortunately, there is still no charger in the box).
Verdict
If you are tired of the same boring glass slabs and operating systems packed with uninstallable apps, the Nothing Phone (4a) is an absolute breath of fresh air.
With an estimated PTA-approved price hovering around PKR 145,000, it delivers flagship-level aesthetics, a stunning 144Hz display, and a perfectly optimized software experience. It is officially the most exciting mid-range phone of 2026.
